Hydraulics installation recently redesigned and modernised because of a diploma thesis.
The hydraulics installation at the Riesa energy competence centre in the vocational school of Saxony, was installed in the 1990s as a means of allowing students of Energy and Environmental Technology to learn its implementation as part of their training. The hydraulics installation was recently redesigned and modernised within the framework of a diploma thesis.In the nineties, the hydraulics system installed as learning object for students of Energy and Environmental Technology in Riesa, energy competence in the vocational school of Saxony. The previous test rig was made up of three radiators and a single pump. Although this allowed the basic principle of hydraulic balancing to be demonstrated, it wasn’t sufficient to replicate the complexity of actual systems.
The hydraulic installation should be capable of simulating modern solutions, as well as older existing systems to provide the students with a sense of what may be encountered in their everyday working life.

The new design features four controllable sublines: underfloor heating, mono-tube heating, bi-tube heating and consumers with constant flow rate. These lines, integrating a total of six radiators, can be balanced using various regulating valves. Based on the prescribed radiator output and the selected temperature spread between supply line and return line, the students are able to calculate the mass flows in the individual lines. The actual mass flows are indicated by variable area flow meters and Vortex flow sensors. By adjusting the settings on thermostatic valves, line balancing valves and differential pressure regulators, the system hydraulics can be adapted to ensure that each line receives the required mass flow from the system. A Nexus Valve Flowmeter BC2 measuring computer from Meibes is used to ascertain the correct preset values. It determines the differential pressure between two measuring points, which is then used to calculate the volume flow in the respective segment.
The measuring computer allows the hydraulic balancing to be performed with maximum precision and in accordance with actual everyday situations, even for existing systems in which the hydraulic conditions are not entirely known.
The new test rig therefore provides a much improved learning environment.
It is also now used for training of trade businesses to provide knowledge of modern application technology.
